Author Claudia Mills Comes to Mill Creek

Author Claudia Mills visited Mill Creek Upper Elementary last Friday, November 19 and presented to both the 5th and 6th grades. Her books include One Square Inch , How Oliver Olsen Changed the World, The Totally Made-up Civil War Diary of Amanda MacLeish, (a Mark Twain nominee), Being Teddy Roosevelt, Trading Places and Ziggy’s Blue Ribbon Day.
Claudia Mills’ mother was an elementary school teacher who gave her a blank notebook when she was six and told her that it was to be her poetry book. She has been writing ever since. Even in elementary school she wrote poems, stories and plays. In high school she began an autobiography called T is Tarzan. Many of her works are still based on her own life adventures and experiences.
She began her professional writing career while she rode to work and back home on a bus. The two-hour trip each way gave her plenty of time to write novels and picture books. She submitted them to a publisher under a fake name because she actually worked for the publishing company. Once, she even had to write a rejection letter to herself. Eventually, the publishers decided they liked some of her works and the rest is history.
Claudia Mills has never been “only” a writer. She has always had other jobs, too. Now she is a professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her other job is being a mom to her two sons, Christopher and Gregory.
